I slipped up just a little bit in not posting ones from 2 weeks ago because now there are a few. More than a few, I suppose. They include a review of Elizabeth Shepherd's album, Parkdale. It is just phenomenal. She is a jazz musician, but has a twang of contempop. More jazz though. I also had a WORDPLAY with DJ No Phrillz, and four write ups for the Citypaper including Janelle Monae, Raheem DeVaughn, Comcast Hip-Hop Showcase and Adele. This week for Citypaper, I did a preview on Philly rapper, Jake Lefco's album release party. I also did something for GeoClan surrounding Father's Day. It features DJ Statik about being a father, and DJ Stress, who has lost his father. I just wanted to do something to show a positive side of fatherhood and the impact it can have. I actually have 2 more of those coming this month! I had a good reason for being behind, which was the 2008 CARE Conference (www.care.org). More on that next post.

I only wrote one thing last week. I had a bunch of side projects to get done, and then I go on vacation, so this will be a little lacking with only 1 or 2 articles for the next 2 or so weeks, but trust that it will pick up. I've made a goal to finally put my portfolio together with all my articles. Trying to make this a serious side hustle...Anyway, this week I wrote about a program in West Philadelphia called the Music and Mentorship Program. They fill in where the formal education system fails, as far as music education. I also went to this benefit and it was awesome...little colored girls dancing, singing, composing, playing instruments....does it get any better? Enjoy, Deesha

Hello - Let me keep this quick. In the past week or so, a lot has happened. Maia and I have started to brainstorm for an event we are putting together for girls in 2009 (more later), C and I have decided to go to Amsterdam (couldn't pass up the cheap flight), I got to see Reef perform (he is phenomenal - check him out at www.myspace.com/reefthelostcauze), register for summer classes (thanks C) and I got to sit in on the CNN Compassion Forum at Messiah college with Clinton and Obama..and I met Obama and had a brief cameo on TV...REAL BRIEF! Oh, I wrote 2 things...one being about the Prader-Willi benefit fundraiser and another on the Philly Hip-Hop Awards..enjoy the write ups and my CNN cameo!

Good Morning - I am exhausted, but happy to be out of town for a few days starting tomorrow. This week was major for me because it was the Citypaper music issue and I got to write about DJ Lady B, who basically brought hip-hop to Philadelphia through the airwaves in 1979. And...she made the cover, which is a first for me in my 4 year Citypaper history. I stumbled a few times writing this and I wanted to make sure I got in what she felt about the current community and current state of hip-hop, but I didn't want to make it like a biography. I am happy that I got to write about a black female in hip-hop and also happy that she is 1 of 2 hip-hop stories in the issue today. I also started my new job last week (http://www.y-hep.org/), so I was all types of overwhelmed. So, anyway...please enjoy and give feedback if you like. Thank God and a bunch of other friends for helping me through. I am exhausted because we had Clayton's surprise Bday party last night where I almost set his friend Ninah's house on fire...long story....anyway....Gotta get to work...xo

What a crazy 2 weeks this has been. I am re-launching Cover Your Lover (Music AIDS organization) and that includes a website, new product and all that stuff. In addition, I started my other job at YHEP, which I really dig (http://www.yhep.org/), I had a HUUUUUUUUUGE story due last week and I am excited about it coming out on Thursday, but nervous. Today is Clayton's Birthday (happy birthday babe) and I am going out of town this weekend. Wooo....craziness! Anyway, I had 2 articles, one on the relaunching of the weekly Candyland party, which is a party with music, dance, and board games. Genius idea if you ask me. The other write up is of the Bodyrock Anniversary, which was last Friday with King Britt...more on that later, but for now, check them out....

The first full week of being 30 is indeed fun. Anyway, busy at work for year end and possibly...well, nevermind. More on that later. I wrote 5 things this week. One is the Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow show which is now sold out, the Money Folders2 and OFS shows, which are both underground hip-hop, a Wordplay on Scanz, an MC in Philly - who is just adorable, and the Boys2Men/Angie Stone show. I think it is actually her show, but because they are from Philly I only wrote about them. I also got asked to be on a hip-hop journalism panel at Temple! How dope is that? Happy New Year, and what a beautiful one it has been so far. 2008 is here and I'm 30 as of yesterday! Anyway, who cares about that? I did some writing so far this year, and actually some of this might be from last year like the Ninth Wonder party, which was also DJ Ultraviolet and Reef's Bday parties and the Greyboy AllStars concert. This year, I did a Wordplay with Illit, a write up on MLK Day coming up (which was edited pretty heavy...not complaining, just saying) and also a very choppy write up on the townhall meeting with the new police commissioner. I was supposed to have a write up for Hip-Hop Lives , but I don't know what happened to that! I have a lot to do for next week and Although I just came back from vacation, I have a travel bug too..ugh!

It's almost 2008! This has been a great year really. I mean...a lot of non-great things have happened, but I really can't judge my year by those, right? Anyway, I only wrote one thing this week and that is a brief review of Amy Winehouse's "Back To Black" album. It made the top 21 2007 releases for Citypaper, and it was my number 4, so I got to write it up. Because Amy is a hot mess right now, I feel the need to profess how much I love her music, so you will also find a concert review I did in May and also a longer review of "Back to Black" I did for Giant Step in April. While Amy Winehouse is a hot, troubled mess — as I type this, the drugged-out bag of bones is chillin' in a London jail — the brilliance of her U.S. debut can't be denied. Her formula, mixing retro sounds with emotionally accessible lyrics, is infectious. Out of that mangled beehive came commercial hits like overplayed "Rehab" and the Ghostface-laced "You Know I'm No Good," which balanced out lesser-known gems like hip-swaying "Tears Dry on Their Own" and ballad "Love is a Losing Game." Hate on her publicly if you want, but be for real — you know Back to Black is a dope (no pun, no pun) ass album. - Deesha Dyer

It is snowing. Winter isn't even officially here yet! Anyway...this week I wrote 2 reviews. One of the Redman show. I wasn't going to go, but last minute I did. It is also Clayton's favorite rapper, so it was good to enjoy that with him. Redman was crazy, and so good. One of the best hip-hop shows I"ve been to in awhile. Next was the Philly's Men Are Cookin' event, which is an event to raise money for a scholarship for lower income students. It was a lot of men cooking a lot of dishes. I had a wonderful time there too. I also did a WORDPLAY on MC Tone Trump from West Philly. Last piece is a preview of the Babyface concert that is this week. Oh snap - I don't think I ever posted up the WORDPLAY with Digs Darklighter, MC and graf artist. Damn...okay, that one is here too. Enjoy!

The latest slice of music by the multi-talented Amp Fiddler contains a healthy dose of funk, soul and dance. Aptly titled, Afro Strut, Fiddler mixes up styles, tempos and vibes to provide an overly satisfying listening experience.

The groove starts with opening track, 'Faith', and it never lets up. The song’s serious bass line lays the undertone for a solid offering. Saadiq’s contribution is definitely heard. The vibe then transitions when Fiddler teams up with breakout star Corinne Bailey Rae on up-tempo vintage track, 'If I Don’t.' The sections where they are singing in unison, like the second part of the chorus give the song an innocent and school crush feel. Some other standouts worth mentioning are 'Right Where You Are' (the beat that comes in around the 35 second mark fits perfectly), 'Ridin', which has both house and disco elements, and 'Come See Me', a track that has Fiddler showing off his falsetto over a laid-back beat - very slick and smooth.

Before getting to my favorite track, I gotta give props for the Jimi Hendrix cover of 'Hey Joe'. This is a dangerous move, afterall…it is Hendrix. Fiddler embodies the original with the vocals and even the rock sound. There are a bit of new millennium generated sounds thrown in, but they aren’t that bothersome truthfully.

I mentioned that I had a favorite and that would be, 'Heaven', featuring soulstress Stephanie McKay. The way the song opens gives me chills…it is haunting and uplifting. McKay and Fiddler make a beautiful combination. The song is soft and speaks of finding solace in tough times – something everyone can definitely relate to.

Afro Strut was released at the right time. Fiddler’s experience and talent with various instruments and with different bands show through the crisp clean sound and production. There are parts within songs where I am just surprised and touch by the adlibs, a hit of a key or stroke of a guitar.

The CD just feels good and I actually play it the entire way through. Can’t think of when the last time I said that about a male funk or soul release.

2 reviews this week. 1 that was easy - Spinderella at Fluid and one that was hard - Stevie Wonder at the Wachovia. Reviewing a DJ is as easy as saying how they did and a few songs they played, but reviewing a LEGEND was a bit harder because I am just afraid of missing or messing something up, but it is my opinion and my review, right? Last week was so crazy that I didn't get to put these up until today. I have so much writing to do...the Stevie Wonder concert review being one of them..WOW..he was AMAZING, and I don't use that word lightly. Anyway, time is short...I wrote about this party Clayton and I went to with a bunch of DJ's, but we only got there in time for ?uestlove! Also gave a little preview to the Spinderella DJ party, which was dope...gotta do that review too, and the last one I did was a write up for the hip-hop band, Philly Slick, who had their album release party over the weekend.

Hello - Happy November! October went by so fast. This week, I wrote 4 things, all for the Philadelphia Citypaper. This week was the 2007 Choice Awards and while I only penned 3 things, I felt confident in those 3. The due date for them creeped up so fast on me this year that I didn't have proper time to think about them..my fault! But, the ones that did win from me were Lady B, Misia Denea and Freshout Media. I will just put their write-ups below, since it is all under one link. The other thing I wrote was a review of the Alice Smith concert last night, which I went with Clayton to. I'll be brief. This week I penned 4 different things. One is the Un-Inhibited Muse event which is here in Philly. It is an art, film, dance, and photo event for local artists, including some high school students. The reason I was so drawn to this and pushed it to the Citypaper is because the founder of the event is someone who is in the community and actually provides opportunities to kids, giving them an alternative to negativity. Next was the 2007 AIDS Walk...which was tiring. Wanted to run it, but nature, luck and my body weren't on my side. Next year for sure. I am on the left side of that picture. I also attended a Frank McComb show at World Cafe Life last night..wow is all I can say - this man is amazingly beautiful on the piano. I wrote a review for Critical Mass. Lastly was the Philly Mayoral conversation meeting that I attended on Monday night. I really wanted to experience this, especially because I talk so much smack about what we need to do to better our communities and confronting our politicians. It's time for the Citypaper bi-annual MUSIC issue! Last time around, I did an article with Jake Lefco/Happ G and DJ Skeme Richards. This year, I got to write about MC Ethel Cee, who I have been WAITING to do something on. She is fierce! I was supposed to also interview Peedi Peedi, but that just didn't work out. Oh well...I am satisfied with Ethel Cee's. She was mad cool to interview and Mike Regan really did a great job photographing her. I love that photo above that he did. He does mostly all CP photography. That should have been the damn CP cover, but all good. Also, looking at the other 10 or so people in there, I'm happy I got to squeeze hip-hop in. Anyway, I also wrote a review on the Large Professor party, which by chance - Ethel Cee hosted. I really need to get caught up on CD reviews and recommendations, mainly the new Raul Midon. This has been a strange week...Just strange. Anyway, the March/Black Thought pictures above were taken by Clayton (http://www.geoclan.com/) and the Ronson picture was taken by Claudia. This week, I wrote 5 things - 2 which were the same thing. Normally I wouldn't do that, but that was the Poor Peoples Economic Human Rights March, which I feel should have been covered everywhere and after looking at the pics wanted to do the event and cause justice. As you see, MC Black Thought was part of the march and that is the angle I had to use to write about it. I also did a Common (I love him - - sorry C) review for GeoClan and wrote about the Mark Ronson gig in NYC, which wasn't that that great. the Wordplay that I did this week is producer N.Batez and I squeezed that in to promote an event this weekend. Anyway, enjoy...music issue of Citypaper coming up soon, so I gotta get my ass to typing in the next few days. I am pretty pleased with who I had to interview.

First of All - GO PHILLIES!

Okay, now that that is out of the way, guess who I met last night? Erykah Badu and Big Daddy Kane. I had a conversation with both. I'm still on cloud 9. I also told them both about GeoClan (http://www.geoclan.com/) and Cover Your Lover (www.myspace.com/coveryourlover) and gave Badu a t-shirt. It was lovely. And Big Daddy Kane was funny and so nice. Anyway, I am fooling around at work, so I gotta get to it. I wrote 4 things this week. One is a Wordplay with MC Side Effect, who has 2 shows this week, another is the MOKA album release party. I just recently discovered them and their sound is really dope. I also wrote about one of Side's shows at Liquid Charm with about 12 or so other acts and then the last one was the Sexual Freedom Day. I think I am back in the swing of things as far as returning from Europe is concerned. I still feel a bit behind and have lots to catch up on. There's a lot going on in my head concerning friendships and what they really mean. That sounds corny, but whatever. This week, I did a WORDPLAY with DJ Tactics, and also contributed to the new Citypaper feature, Critical Mass, which basically reviews anything and everything. I want to step my review game up, so I hope to participate in this atleast once a week or something. This week I attended 2 lunchtime type mini performances. Hi -

I am still in Germany, so this will be short! The big feature I was working on for Citypaper is out today. This feature was so important to me and I am so thankful to those that made it happen, especially my editors, the people I interviewed and my friends here in Germany who let me work while I was at their house. I stayed up all night last week and finished it on a German keyboard....not so easy..hahaha...The article is about the divisions and animosity between the different sub-scenes in Philadelphia. I feel good about how it turned out and would have loved more space, but such is life. Maybe there will be a part 2. The picture above is of Cosmo Baker (second picture) , who I interviewed. I also may put the full interviews online. Not sure yet. The other piece is an animal symposium that I got assigned last minute (third picture of person appearing at event). It is not only for animal rights, but also social justice in general. It also includes a Veggie Cabaret. I have an image of people dressed as carrots dancing around! The last one I did is of Josh Valocci (first picture) - who is a music writer over at the Philadelphia Weekly, which is a rival of Citypaper. I did a Wordplay on him for 215. He is a nice guy. Sunday Sweet Tooth - August 5, 2007

Album: Finding Forever, Common, Genre: Rap

I love this man. Well, not really. I just love how cute he is, but all that aside - I hate the cover of this album, but not the content that is inside. My first hearing it fully was on the way to Canada last weekend. I found myself calling out like four different songs as my favorite, but I decided on "Break My Heart". It has an infectious groove and the chorus is catchy, romantic and all that jazz. It is easily a song that most women would love. I also love how they twisted the Nina Simone song, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" on the song appropriately titled, "Misunderstood". D'Angelo turns up also. Another song to note is "Black Maybe". The Kayne guest collaboration on "Southside" is surprisingly nice. I can't stand his voice usually. I just dig the message. Artist: W. Ellington Felton, Genre: Ummm – let’s say hip-hop

But truthfully, it’s a little bit of everything. I know everyone says that when describing music, but in this case, it is true. I was introduced to this artist about 2 – 3 years ago, when his song “Beautifully Absurd” showed up on a Prince Paul album I was reviewing. I fell in love with the song, but didn’t hear much about the singer. Fast forward to this past weekend where this skinny, light skinned man came on stage to open for Fertile Ground …I still didn’t put 2 and 2 together until I got home and realized after looking online that it was the same dude. Entertaining, he is..and a bit different. He is very honest in his lyrics and his band is pretty tight. I suggest heading over and checking him out. Try the Kayne song, which is a bit of a call out on Mr.West’s hypocrisy. I thought it was dope. FYI - that picture is from the concert on Saturday: www.myspace.com/wellingtonfelton

This is a song acquired through the GS trading group. I think it is just amazing, relaxing and calming, which I need right now. It is basically an instrumental with vocals thrown in here and there. The singing vocals are nice, the talking vocals I can do without, but I can overlook that because the song is so nice. It has a break in the middle with trumpet solo and when the beat comes back in, it’s chilling…and the groove never stops. The soundbites are a nice addition and I just overall dig it. I haven’t heard anything else by this group, so who knows how their other stuff is, maybe I’ll check it out. Album: Introducing Tortured Soul by Tortured Soul, Genre: Dance

I can’t imagine how I’ve been doing this for a few weeks and haven’t mentioned this group. Maybe I have and don’t remember. I love this group. They are made up of 3 men, and I saw them open up for Los Amigos Invisibles and have been hooked ever since. What is mesmerizing about them is that they play all of their instruments, which is rare in dance music because usually the beats are generated via computer. The drummer is also the lead vocalist, and he is intense. I mean…it was frightening. I went up to a guy at the concert and asked him about TS and he said, “You will be hooked. I am”. I didn’t pay any attention and 8 months later, I agree. It is a bit soulful and although the beats can get redundant, the entire package is wrapped so nicely. They just came out with a remix with DJ Spinna called “Why”, but I suggest you checking out “Epic” (tempo changes are crazy), “How’s Your Life”, and my personal favorite, “I might do something wrong”. This week was grand and that is mainly because I was in Niagara Falls and Toronto. I loved them both. The magnitude of Niagara was overwhelming and the culture of Toronto was beautiful, seeped into my skin and made me want to go back. It was also great because I was stressed right before I went writing these pieces. Reason is because it was hard to sum up group Fertile Ground in 50 - 75 words. I love them and can't wait to see them this weekend. One of the other pieces was for GeoClan and I was happy to do that because they are an organization that stands for something, but it was hard because some of them are dear friends and I wanted to try and make it stand out from other art/music events, which I think I did. The other event is the 4th annual African Independence Day. The issue with that was not putting people off by making the organization sound extreme and also the hypocrisy of the organizers pushing positivity through the performers, yet having Gillie Da Kid slated to perform. And I just read the final and it is a bit different from the second draft I handed in, but that is all good. But ahhhh, they are here and done. I feel wonderful about writing up 2 community events also, since that is my core. I have to give love to my editors Monica, Tami and Pat. They listened to me this week and for that I'm grateful. I am going to try and branch out from people I know and the DJ/MC type. We'll see how that works. My other 2 assignments were for Citypaper I got and had to turn around in about 15 hours, but I got it done. One is the iStandard producer showcase and other is Maze and Frankie Beverly. Fantastic. This album came out awhile ago, and I did a review on it, which I can't find right now, but anyway...I saw her live for the third time this past Wednesday. Her voice is indeed a hate or love. I don't think it is anything that you can grow to love. Instantly upon hearing 'Love Endeavor', I knew I'd be a permanent fan. Her voice is very powerful. Chaka, Chaka, Chaka - woooooooooooooahhhh. This song is from her upcoming album due out in September. I heard the entire song with Mary J, but on Chaka's MySpace you can only hear a snippet, but it's a good snippet. If you do get to hear the entire song, don't be put off by the typical and boring beginning, it gets better. This is definitely a dance song..it is stank type funky with Chaka hitting that high volume note. It can be mistaken for a little screaming, but all I want to do is get down to it. Bob Marley and the Wailers: Roots, Rocked, Remixed, Genre: Reggae/Dance

I don't know...I must admit that I'm not a big fan of reggae really, but I do dig Marley and company for their ability to crossover and still be true. However, I don't think that these remixes really sound smooth. It's a mesh between dance and reggae that I still am out to see about. While I appreciate the effort, it is going to take me some time to digest and listen to the whole thing completly, but because I respect Marley and some of the remixers, Imma give it a chance. This week has been a bit subdued. A dear friend at work asked me what was wrong because I don't seem balanced. I am all good. Just chillin...but good! Tonight is the Alice Smith show. I am excited for that. This week, I wrote 4 things for the Philadelphia Citypaper. I decided not to write a review on the Mark Ronson show for a few reasons. Great show though. Anyway, looking forward to seeing Raul and Chrisette tomorrow! There is an article on that (Musiq headlines, but have seen him a few times and just not into him anymore). My bad for this being a few days late. Blame the Mark Ronson concert in New York and the four Citypaper articles, which are appearing this week. But anyway, I have the Sweet Tooth to do also, and to make up for the tardiness, I have some treats that I'll put up tomorrow. First of all, TV on Sunday nights suck! Sunday Sweet Tooth....on Monday :0

This is a day late because I was on my laziness yesterday. I was emailing contacts all day for Cover Your Lover stuff for World AIDS day and before I knew it I was boring myself watching The Good Sheppard. Atleast it had Matt Damon in it and a few other cute pale boys.

Anyway, I have four recommendations that are all slightly different - hope you find one that sticks to you.

DJ Shurikan, Genre: House, Electronic

Okay, let me keep it real. I put this in here because he is fine as hell (white boy with blue eyes above). I mean..damn..I mean...wow! Could you imagine if I heard his accent? *faint* Okay, so off to his music. My favorite that I've heard was his tribute to J-Dilla, which is on his myspace page. What I dig about it is the groove and the mellow vibe about it. If you don't find yourself nodding your head just a bit, then you might want to check your pulse. I picked this one immediately after Shurikan because this album also has a tribute to JDilla, that is really, really nice. It's called "JDillalude". It starts off with phone conversation, but then moves into a nice piano number overtop of a freshly laced beat. Other tracks to check out on there are "Y' outta Praise Him" and "F.T.B.". The entire album just feels good. I can throw it on while cooking, cleaning or entertaining. Elizabeth Shepherd Trio, Genre: Jazz

I was on a jazz kick this week really, and I'm so happy my dear friend in Germany (Hi Karen) put me on to Elizabeth Shepherd. She is out of Canada and I think her voice is unique, sweet and rare for a female jazz singer. I mean, not like extraordinary, but something about her manipulating notes and words makes me a fan. I currently am really diggin' the "Just Gettin' By" remix (I love how the progression of the beat sound gives it a dance feel), and "Midnight Sun" (very light, innocent and when the chorus picks up - stellar), and "Four", but that is because of the dancing. Song: Steppin', Reel People, Genre: Soul/Hip-Hop

As I typed that I thought to myself what classifies soul as soul and not R&B and when did soul become a genre? Anyway...I got this passed on through an Italian friend (Costa Grande) - so Gratzi..wait, is that how you say thank you in Italian? I am so off course. I really love this song. It gripped me immediately, with the exception of the rap which sounds kind of out of place and I can't place who the MC is, but anyway...Vanessa Freeman chill relaxed singing on this track combined with the subtle breaks does it for me. Plus the positive message came at a time where I needed it. I think that this song serves as a motivation and the end of the track has a very smooth ending. Hello and happy 4th of July to my fellow USA residents. It's beautiful in Philadelphia right now. Festivities everywhere and weather perfect. I am off for a run, but wanted to post these up first. This was a tough week of writing. I took up the challenge of interviewing Michael Eric Dyson who is a hip-hop noteworthy. I don't want to run down his resume, but this man is pretty fierce and opionated. He's challenged Bill Cosby and the ladies of the View (on air). He's written about Tupac and Marvin Gaye (just google him). First of all, I've never interviewed an author (it is usually musicians), never did a Q and A type interview for Citypaper and also hadn't read this particular book. It didn't get to me in time. Next, he talks and I mean a lot...so at the end of the interview I had 1200 words, which I had to somehow squeeze to 500! Editing someone like him isn't easy because everything is connected, and so if you pull one sentence, the ones around it don't make sense. And this isn't some indie musician I was messing with, so I really couldn't be lazy with it. And, we had to do the interview on the phone, so I was working off of a recorded phone conversation! I worked on it hard for days and turned it in a day late (sorry Monica), but ahhh...it's here and I am so happy with how it turned out. I will go see him on Tuesday also. Not that this man is so uber elite that I was scared. I was more worried about represented him correctly. Interviewing him was a huge step for for me...*wipes off forehead and breathes*

Never have I asked my editor to pull a write up, but after dealing with the promoter, I asked him to. Information was missing and attitude was flying and I really don't play that especially on a deadline. But, my editor didn't listen and ran it...atleast it is small and I didn't spend a lot of time on it...headache!

I got hip to him last year through some friends that I met through the Jamie Cullum website (he opened up for JC) and I have dug him ever since. I didn't get the chance to see him in Philly a few months ago, but I just got this information and goodies that are soooo sweet, you are sure to have a few cavities. Article..as in 1! There was couple reasons for this. First of all, I'm tired! Secondly, didn't get any assignments from Citypaper and the other 2 I did aren't posted up yet. So, this is the one that is. The story with this is - I got an email asking me to review it. I've never heard of Kenge Kenge, but I figured traditional African music...I can do it. So it got it the mail and really took a liking to the high energy and percussion throughout. Plus, the review was only to be short, so I was all about that. Next week I have a lead in the Citypaper with author Michael Eric Dyson. There's a few things that made that interview quite difficult, but I was happy to do it and I'll get into that later. How is that for a title? Well for now it is going to stick! I think Sunday is a good day to do this because that is supposed to be my chill day. Song: 'Just Because' by Conya Doss, Genre: R&B

I think this came out like 2 years ago, so yup...I'm mad late. Conya Doss is the truth. She hails from Cleveland, Ohio, USA. This song was on one of my mixes from the Giant Step trade group. I love them...I really do! Anyway, this mid-tempo song has a light sunshine love vibe to it. The chorus is very simple, "I'm into you just because you make me happy". It's so beautiful and starts off with some birds lightly chirping or something. Not to mention that Ms.Doss is just as beautiful as she wants to be. This song is just very cute and innocent, crush-like. Album: 'Find the Form' by Ernesto, Genre: Pop, Fusion of Jazz and Soul

I love this album, and the man behind the album, Ernesto. He's a skinny little thing from Sweden. He's so cute with his blonde hair. Cute like I want to put him in my pocket! This album came as a shock to me. I first heard "Closer" and I was sold. Seriously! It's has this subtle sexy vibe to it. Not to fast, not to slow - just right you know? The instrumentation grabbed a hold of me also. The entire album is pretty dope included "Held" and "Sick and Tired" which are my other favorite cuts. I think he can really sing. I heard him on some house style mixes too and was impressed. And, his official site has different charitable links on it. Not only do I like his music, but he is a nice guy - replied to my My Space message...awww! Album: 'Welcome to the Best Years of Your Life' by Ben Westbeech, Genre: ?

I seriously don't know what type of genre to call this album. Ben is a lovely man I discovered through Giles Peterson, who next to God is the best man ever! But, Giles will get proper credit in a future blog. Ben Westbeech is this singer that I just really dig. I heard 2 songs on his My Space and went out and bought his entire album. The two that did it for me were "Get Closer (lovers mix)" and "Hang Around". Truth be told, I couldn't really understand a word of "HA", just the chorus and that was enough for me. The song has these broken beat type sounds throughout the song, and right before the chorus it really is highlighted when he is just kinda adlibing or doing a generic sound over the beat. He actually reminds me a lot of Jamie Lidell. But, I try not to compare, but this sound is so similar. Ben has a soft voice and it's just catchy. Album: 'The Daily News' by Donnie, Genre: straight up soul

THIS ALBUM TOOK TOO DAMN LONG TO COME OUT! Okay, now that I got that out of my system - thank God Donnie is back. I have missed him seriously. He needed some time to work things out - cool, I'll forgive him. This is the follow up to 'The Colored Section', which to me easily ranks in the top 10 of soul albums in the last decade. This album isn't as good to be honest, but it's still wonderful! Donnie's voice is so unique and so truthfully genuine. It honestly pierces through me. It stands out also. If you played 5 tracks, his would be the one you'd remember because of his voice. The lead single was the perfect choice. It's called 'If I Were You', and it just feels good and the video has this simple vibe to it. The other tracks I dig on the album are 'Impatient People' and '911'. He also has a collab with Phonte from Little Brother. His albums are very socially driven, so the tracks talk about issues or problems going on in the world. Song: 'I'll Kill Her' by Soko, Genre: Rock

So, after Donnie I put this...I debated about it, but I really love the song. I don't advocate violence at all! It's a bit crazy, but the French artist, Soko is just so little and cute that it's a shock to see such anger come out of her. And truth be told - many girls think what she's saying..not think of killing someone but the bitter and pissed off feeling that Soko conveys. Also,this is acoustic, which gives it a more tone down feel. I found this through MIA's site. She recommended it and funny thing is I don't even know why I was on MIA's site, I don't like her. Anyway....the words to the actual verses are hilarious and to hear her sing words like 'cinema' and 'kill her' in the French accent is somewhat a draw in...Okay, so it's psychotic, but in some eerie way I really like this song and I commend the girl for writing a song like this. She says, "She stole my future when she took you away". Maybe she made the song for shock value or maybe it's a true story...I don't know. But I bought it on the ITunes the day I heard it! I got my hair done yesterday, so I'm feeling all types of fab today! Well, not really. Rough week again, but I am guided by Lupe Fiasco, "Struggle is another sign that God loves you", and "Life ain't meant to go around twice - so I gotta get it right." That's lovely, isn't it? They are from his song 'Real' that I've been playing non-stop. Matter of fact, I'm going to put it on right now! The first edition of the music reviews seem to be quite a hit with people...well, the people that say they read it and dig it so far. I don't have a name yet - any suggestions? I need you all to comment to, so the blog appears to be as popular as my little mind thinks it is! I'm still exhausted from DC, but I want to be consistent about this, so here goes.

Next week I am going to do a entire 'European White Boy Phenomenom'. I should just get it over with. For some reason, they are catching me a bit, and I mean like 10 or so of them. But for this week..check out the following:

Album: Play With the Changes by 4Hero, Genre: Soulful House/Dance

I love, love, love, love this album. I actually didn't expect to dig it so much, but as soon as I heard 'Look Inside', I knew immediately that I would be playing this track over and over again. It's rare that you get the combination of lyrics and music perfectly and I think with every single track, the boys (or men...) of 4Hero have done it. Also gotta give props to Philly homegirl, Lady Alma, as she teams up with the duo again (I first heard her with them on Vikter Duplaix's album on song 'Hold It Down') for 'Sink or Swim'. I feel like this can easily become my soundtrack for 2007. My moods are best described by music and this albums inspires me to dance and express everything I feel. I love 4hero, I really do. They've even made my top friends on My Space..yeah, like that means much! But seriously, give them a try. One reason why I wished I lived overseas...I'd get to see them DJ. Alice Russell, Genre: Soul

Notice that I didn't put an individual song or album and that's because I dig a few of Ms.Russell's tracks from her last 2 albums. First, let me talk about the picture of her and I above. It was taken at the Black Lily film festival closing concert, where she performed. Jill Scott (met before), Amy Winehouse (wouldn't have been coherent - ha) and some others were there, but it was Alice that I wanted to meet. I am happy that not as many people knew her as much as I did, so I got this picture. I know I look a mess, but whatever! Her voice is so powerful. Matter of fact, when I first heard it, I was like, 'damn...she don't need a microphone', but then I got into it pretty heavy. Starting with the Natural Self collaboration, 'I Don't Need This Trouble' (must listen), and then moving on to the White Stripes cover of 'Seven Nation Army' (great theme for fighting some personal battles), and then on to 'Somebody's Gonna Love You'. Her voice and vibe is just ill. I mean, she has this old school sound, and it helps a lot that she picks complimentary people to collab with like the Quantic Soul Orchestra. Album: I Am by Chrisette Michelle, Genre: R&B

Okay, so let me be the first to admit that I wasn't immediately impressed by Chrisette Michelle. She's a beautiful young woman, but I thought to myself..okay, here we go - 'another female singer daring to be different, but really sounding the same'. Then I got her song, 'Your Joy' free on Itunes and started to change my mind, but not completely. Then I got her CD sampler and read a bit about her and I did a 360, well 300. She has a beautiful voice, and this mellow CD is a perfect fit for relaxing. It is pretty innocent and she has potential to be a contender in the future of R&B. My only issue is that it's a little too mellow. I couldn't possibly play this on the way out to dance or if I wanted to cheer up. So, maybe she could have included a bit more upbeat songs, but the young sis' is doing her thing and staying true to herself, so who am I to ask her to do any different? Exactly! Song: Just Let It Happen by Rob Harris, Genre: Dance

This is on its third rotation as my My Space Profile song. That is how much I feel it. Crippled by the fact that you can't get the song anywhere, so your only choice is going on Rob's My Space and refreshing the page. Damn, that's annoying! Anyway, I know some of you are wondering who Rob Harris is and umm, duh - he's the guitarist for Jamiroquai! How could you not know that? I kid. I look so bad in my picture with him, that I had to steal this one from his My Space. Anyway, I have no clue who is the voice on this with him, but the vibe just feels right and the message is bold, 'Just Let It Happen'. Although it is relating to love, I kind of point it to everything in my life. Immediately upon hearing it I imagine myself in the club on top of one of those box things that teeter me above everyone else and somehow I'm lip singing to this. I don't know where that vision comes from, but it just does. I think it's the freedom I feel while listening. There is a saxaphone feature a bit into it that gives it a nice jazz, Havana type feel. Song: "How Glad I Am" by the Greyboy Allstars, Genre: Funk, Jazz

I have my Giant Step trading crew buddy DJ Veggie to thank for this, as he put it on one of the compilations he gave to me. Upon further investigation, I realized that this group had been out for a long time. Where the hell was I? Under a rock? I love my Giant Step family of fans, but anyway....this song has this 70's type breakin' feel, as in I want to bust out the Rerun dance move when I hear it, but it also has a hint of the hippie chic type vibe to it. What is most important to notice about it is the impeccable instrumentation. The vocals take a backseat to them. I hear a bit of West Coast flavor in this track also. I know they would be amazing live,and my dad would dig them also. Listening to this is like travelling back in a the machine where jazz and funk didn't sound like pop and easy listening. Hi - I am rushing because it is my first day back at work after being in Washington, DC for 2 days, so this will be very, very quick. Lobbying at Congress was amazing. Introducing...my new blog feature

*okay, so I had this name for my new venture and umm...as I started to type, I realized I didn't like it, so give me a second (week or so) to figure out a new name*

Simply put, I love music. Everyone does, right? No...I really do. I seek out new music often, and sometimes I am late at discovering what is popular, and this is not on purpose. I don't get the radio at home or at work. So, in addition to me posting about my writings each week, or bi-weekly, I am going to post up singles and albums I am feeling for the week or bi-weekly. Some may be old and some may be new, but I am doing this in an attempt to expose people (if anyone reads this) to some new tunes and to improve my writing - give me another outlet of expression of sorts. I have no idea if anyone will read this, but it's fun. I will still do my regular reviews, interviews and writings, but this is just something extra that I can be do freely without editors. It will also help keep my mind off of some other things that bring me down...you dig? Enjoy!

Single: "Stronger" by Myron Butler & Levi, Genre: Gospel

I discovered this song through the death of Hi-Five lead singer, Tony Thompson...which was this week. RIP. I was cruising around My Space in boredom. I was on his My Space page and clicked on his girlfriend's My Space. I have no clue why. But, she is a Gospel singer and had this song as her profile. I immediately put it on mine too. It's very uplifting and upbeat and I needed that this week. It just filled me with hope and love...all that warm stuff. The choir is fantastic and their harmony left me in awe. The lyrics touch me a bit inside. "I'm stronger than I was before. I'm better and smiling so much more." EP: "Love Song" by Sara Bareilles, Genre: Rock, Soul:

She actually first reminded me of a singer I can't stand and that is Sarah McLachlan. But, Ms. Bareilles is so, so, so much better. She is also has that classic beauty about her. But, this is about the music. This is a 3 track CD with "Love Song", "Bottle It Up" (my least favorite), and "Gravity". Her voice is very soft and comforting. In "Love Song" she gets a bit aggressive with her vocals, but it works for the mood and tone she sets. The melody and tempo is catchy. But, the shining star of the EP is "Gravity". You'd put this on to get a good cry out. Well, atleast I did. I first heard of her this week and I'm looking forward to hearing more. I'd like to see her live too, but she is opening for Mika - and I don't do Mika. I think I played "Gravity" about 5 times in a row. It is THAT moving. Check her and the songs out here. Album: "Cinco De MoWo" by Mocean Worker, Genre: Dance, Electronica:

Never heard of dude until someone tipped me off to check it out. Electronica isn't my thing, and I do love dance music, but usually dance music that has a soulful house sound. Everything else reminds me of dancing at a rave (which I only did once) or college days dancing with Ben until the wee hours of the morning. So, anyway..when I got this I was really, really impressed, because my body wanted to move. My favorite track is "Que Bom", which has vocals and a nice Latin flare to it. I don't know if it is the drums or what...but I really dig it. Alana Da Fonseca is the vocalist and she is real smooth and relaxing with it. The instrumentation is a bit sensual. I think I might make this my new myspace profile song. I also dig the jazz element in "Changes" which features trumpet phenom, Herb Albert. Single: "Eat To Live", Talib Kweli, Genre: Rap

Let me be honest, I haven't been listening to rap much lately (I just recently listened to the whole Lupe Fiasco album...which I love). I don't know why. Well, yes I do. There has just been so much other music out there that I've been lovin' more. But, I got my hands on this song and I am so impressed with Kweli for sounding like he did with Blackstar. I know we aren't supposed to reminisce, blah..blah...blah, but truth is he really went down lyrically in my book after "Quality", well during. The beat on "Eat To Live" is really mellow and so are his rhymes. They carry a heavy message, but it's not preachy or overdone. After hearing this, I'm not getting my hopes up about his full length - "Ear Drum", which is supposed to be out in July (which they will push up, I'm sure), but I have a glimpse of hope that this will be better than the last album. www.myspace.com/talibkweli

This week was emotionally draining! My close friends know why, and since this isn't a blog about my personal life - I'll leave that be. I'm sitting at my desk eating oatmeal - GROSS! But, when I was at softball on Sunday, John told me to try eating it for breakfast for health reasons, so I am trying, but I dunno. Next week, I take on Congress and Capitol Hill. I sit down with them on Thursday. I am soooooo damn excited. There are 3 issues we (CARE) are taking to the Hill, but my favorite one is "Empowering Women and Girls to Protect Themselves against HIV/AIDS."

Anyway, this week, I have 2 links for you. I actually wrote another for the Citypaper, but I think Pat (CP editor) had to cut that whole section this week. All good. One is the Amy Winehouse concert review (love that Jay used an older picture of her). I know it was a month ago, but hey...things take time. I am still bangin' both her albums pretty hard. The girl can sing. F- everything else about her. Also, wrote up an upcoming Leela James performance. This week and last week has been a bit strange. Trying to get things situated with school and also get some goals together as far as Cover Your Lover is concerned..meaning the trademark, copyright and website done. I think I may recruit some volunteers too. Anyway, I am really missing Jamiroquai concerts at the moment. You know when the only thing I have to worry about is making it in the front row...damn, I love that band. At anyrate, I still have to do a recap of my event...but just been to errrr, pre-occupied. I skipped a week because of the fundraiser, which was this past Saturday. I am so happy it is over. We were able to raise some funds, but all in all...planning events is so not my thing. It's been a weird week and a half so to say. I'm so nervous about the fundraiser next week. If you are looking for information for that, see post below this one. I started running and getting my body in shape to run. Can I just say that even though I steady go the gym, running is pure madness. I swear I have asthma and swear I'm about to die about 5 minutes into it. But I keep going. I will run those races this year, even if it literally kills me. Today it is supposed to rain and that bums me out, because I can't run in the rain..I don't have white people hair! Fight World Hunger

Philadelphia, PA/April 16, 2007 – Tackling an issue that still haunts our world today, a hunger awareness event and fundraiser will be held on May 12, 2007 at the Rotunda (40 th and Walnut). The night will be a unique opportunity for people to step into the shoes of those that are faced with a food crisis whether it is due to their economic or medical condition.

The night will use music, dance, slideshow, art and an unusual dining experience to get the point across that healthy food is a basic human right. The proceeds raised will benefit Philabundance (3) and MANNA(4), two Philadelphia organizations, both committed to the fight in their own way.

Providing the music will be the ever so fresh DJ Skeme Richards, who has 20 years into the Philly scene spinnin' everything from breaks, soul, hip-hop and funk. DJ Phsh will also take a turn on the 1's and 2's giving a little taste of why he's becoming a staple in the Philly hip-hop scene.

The Nzinga Arts Collective will be providing the visuals with a dance that will display the struggle, hope and beauty of humanity. The 3-woman ensemble communicate their emotions through the use of their bodies.

There will also be a series of giveaways throughout the night in addition to your chance to purchase a unique artistic creation that will remind you of the hunger problems facing the impoverished every day, and your willingness to help.

Representatives from MANNA and Philabundance will be on hand to talk about each of their organizations. Tickets for the dinner should be purchased in advance ($10) and for the party ($6). (1) Launched October 2003, Cover Your Lover (CYL) was founded as a tool to connect the hip-hop and AIDS community. CYL moonlights at adult hip-hop spots around the city, distributing over 1,000 condoms and leaflets containing information and education about preventing the spread of AIDS, and the importance of testing. Concentrating its efforts on perishable foods, Philabundance has developed a food distribution system that includes direct delivery and local hubs. On January 1, 2005, Philabundance combined forces with the Philadelphia Food Bank, which had concentrated on non-perishable food, to provide a "Full Plate of Services" to member agencies. I am extremely tired right now from having a StressEcho cardiology test done. Work is quite busy, my friend Davina is going to be on Malaysia's edition of 'So You Think You Can Dance', this IMUS shit is on my nerves, a student at Virginia Tech killed 33 people - massive prayers go out, I'm questioning whether I should try to go into journalism for real (probably won't), at the stage where I like a boy and don't know if he likes me (reminder of why I don't date - first and last time you'll hear me mention my love life), I am teaching a sexual health workshop in 2 weeks, my Hunger fundraiser is in 3 weeks, and I miss my friend Casey. Anyway, I wrote 3 things to share with you. They are all fairly small. One is the famed Kool Herc (see picture) who will be spinnin' at Tastytreats this week, the other is the Reef/Sean Price/JMT show at the Trocadero. I was going to wait until next week to post these links, but I need something to do during the commercial breaks of "The Office". Here are 2 reviews that I did for Giant Step. One of them is the Amy Winehouse 'Back to Black' album. I listened to it with no influences. Meaning I didn't read any other reviews and I also didn't read any gossip about her. I wanted to write it based strictly on the music. Anyway, I also had to be sure not to compare it to her first release which I love because America didn't get that release and many people wouldn't relate.

The Robin Thicke concert was really dope and I tried to convey my enthusiasm the best I could. I will be checking him out again, and as my friend Jessica says, 'He is so not ugly'. I am spoiled with being in the front row though I realize. Anyway, enjoy the reads! I think I am going to do Joss Stone's album soon.....which I love! I know it seems I only review albums I dig and that's true - it's easier that way and I don't have time or energy to do a bad one. So when I am asked I just say....no thanks!

What a rough 2 weeks this has been. For the first time in a long time, I didn't get some stuff in or do as much writing as I had planned. I still have the Amy Winehouse review to hand in and the Robin Thicke concert review (he's a great performer)...I must focus and get caught up. Anyway, this week I did 3 small Sound Advices for Citypaper, one which is a Gospel concert. I'm happy I got to squeeze that in - I never have done one for the paper before - wait, maybe a looong time ago. Of course, people are complaining that I didn't include Outerspace as performers - damn...always complaining about something! Also, I am helping out the good folks over at 215hiphop.com. It's a hip-hop website for the Illadelph region. It's called Wordplay and it's very simple and stupid questions that I ask of local personalities affiliated with the hip-hop community. *I had to do a manual update on this blog and it is frustrating me!*

Anyway, this week is the Citypaper Music Issue, which is why I didn’t write anything last week. I really wanted to represent in this issue. I was surprised and delighted when both local artists that I chose got picked to be featured, Happ G/Jake Lefco and DJ Skeme. I picked them both because they are extremely hard workers and really are talented. I haven’t written about either and thought they deserved it. When you are told to pick 2 artists, and you know about 100…it’s a grueling process! Added to that, I consider them all friends, which made it even harder. Plus, Happ is a critic. I love him, but he notices everything, so I knew I couldn’t skid by with something mediocre. With Skeme, it was hard not to portray him as just a Break DJ, because he’s so good at that. Plus, I did his article second, and time was pressed. During intermission of Color Purple in NYC on Sunday, I busted out my pad and pen and was writing it. Alas…they are done and I am VERY please with how they came out, and the photos, which are by Michael T. Regan. Hopefully this will help build up Citypaper's reputation in the hip-hop community! Next week I’ll be doing some concert and CD reviews I think, so look out for them. Until next time, Deesha

I am exhausted today - had to be to work at 645am! But, it's Thursday and that is my favorite TV night, so I'll be vegging out. I had a great time teaching last night. Teaching dance to adults isn't as hard as I thought it would be :). Anyway, while my boss is in the meeting still, I have some person work to sneak in, so I will hurry this up. Only one thing this week at that is the legendary DJ Scratch at Fluid. I want to go, but you know I get tired when it's time to get dressed. I'm getting old! Next week I have 2 concerts, which means 2 reviews and the music issue for Citypaper is coming up and I'll get to write about a local MC that works his ass off, so I'm excited. Anyway....

Work has been uber busy this week, so I have to keep this short.

Lily Allen impressed me with her concert. I wasn't too impressed with her attitude or her album, but I was proved a little wrong. I wouldn't go see her on my own, but I really had a wonderful time. She's so cute with her dancing. The pictures aren't good because we were on the side and up a bit, but it was a great spot. Thank you Chena for taking me! The other write up is small. ...I have to rush this blog today because I came in to work early to get things done and I only have a few minutes, so here goes. I am a bit sore from teaching dance last night and I don't know why..anyway - This week I had 2 writings in the lovely Citypaper. One on Lily Allen and her Monday show and the other on a local hip-hop show. The Lily Allen one was a bit tough, because to tell you the truth - I think she tries too hard to be tough, when all that is unnecessary. But, I wrote it anyway. Then the local hip-hop show changed venues at the last minute because the original venue (5 spot) burned down. That almost didn't make it in the paper with the change, but it did.

Next, I need to pay a bit of respect to the people that have directly landed me in this writing spot:
Funk Wizard Snow from PhillyHipHop. com...I had my first articles there in 2001 or was it 2002? Thank you Snow!

Next is Aine' Doley or Applez to many of you. She and I were just fellow writers, not really friends, but when she left the Citypaper she let me know to go for the job and get paid for writing. That was about 2 years ago and I'm still at Citypaper. Thanks Aine!

Next is Adam from Giant Step - When I opened my mouth about the Jamiroquai promotion, he approached me real calm on the side about doing some writing at Giant Step. Down the road, Michael, Mehmet and Maurice have all given me that opporturnity to keep it going. Thank you all!

...since I had the health issue the past week, I only wrote one thing and it was short. I have a few coming up in the next couple of weeks, but can only handle 1-2 a week anyway.
Sidenote: I just entered this competition to win tickets to go see Jamiroquai perform at the end of February/early March either on the 'Gig In The Sky' plane or in Athens, Greece. With what money? And after Lovebox this summer and my fall 2005 Jamiroquai overdose, I don't think my boss will go for me going again. Ahhh well, a girl can dream!

BLOG CHANGE

I don't think anyone really follows these ramblings anyway, and I'm not the type to spill guts in a blog anyway. The internet isn't as big as people think! I originally re-opened this blog to track my Europe trip and it was great to share that with you. There is so much I didn't share, and it's not because I didn't want to, I just got lazy with words and it all happened so fast. I sent an email to most of you with photos documenting the trip, so that was your photojournal per say.

But I realized that I don't have a place where all my writings can be read. Oh wait now..I'm not going back in the archives and posting all those articles, but from here on out, I will use this space to post them up. Some may be interesting..some may not be..but hey....I want to share them with you!

I'll do it weekly, so at the end of this week expect the first batch of my creations. They won't be long. Some will be reviews, some interviews, some event write ups, blah, blah, blah...just enjoy!

Oh damn, this means I have to change the description of the blog! :)

I realize that I've been lacking on eating vegetables, so I'm making broccoli. I don't know why this is, when I love veggies and I'm used to eating them everyday.

When people tell you to get over "it" when they aren't the one going through "it". I mean...really. No one has said this to me or I'd punch them in the face. You know sometimes violence is so the answer. I kid, I kid!

Why are people up at 6am? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY on a night I didn't take any Tylenol PM!
aghhhhhh!

I was awoken by lots of people walking down the street. They sounded like something was wrong, so of course I get up and look to see if something was really wrong. They sounded like young girls, but I heard and saw nothing when I got up.

Until about 5 minutes later. I heard someone say, 'I can't believe this is happening at 6 in the morning'. I have no clue what happened, but I wish that lady would go to bed, as she is currently making too much noise outside.

Police cars everywhere and an ambulance. Which means EVERYBODY in the neighborhood is woken up and goes outside to see whats happening. So by this time, there is commotion in the street from the authorities, plus everyone half awake in pajamas speculating what's going on. I didn't go out there, because I was to lazy to put on proper clothes.

The police are gone, but now everyone is kind of awake. Just right now, some lady yelled down the street to another lady. I'm saying....it's ass early, go back to bed people please!

I love living where I live, and would never change city for suburban life, but damn..this 6am shit is ridiculous. And of course you don't want to tell the people to quiet down, then everyone on the block hates you. Oh, I'll shut up and stop complaining. In a way it is kind of nice to know these peole are so nosy. That way if something happens around here and to my house, I'll know that someone will let me know. I feel safe - It is a beautiful Sunday, I got a lovely email this morning and it's alright now...and I took my scarf off to see my hair and it is beautiful still - I got it done yesterday and you know how sleeping is a test. You wake up the next morning and rush to see if it still looks good - I passed the test.

Going back to bed now....

wow. just wow. for those of you who don't know, sola is and has been the percussionist in jamiroquai for many a years now (that's jay slang). he is originally from nigeria, but raised in europe. i interviewed him for cover your lover - such a deep soul. he is a wonderful talent, but even more a very humble and kind man and on june 9th while on my vacation, i had the chance to take a lesson with him. his teaching style is loving, but serious. his craft isn't to be laughed at...you dig?
first let me point out, that drumming isn't my thing. but sometimes i see the guys drumming when i'm dancing and it always intrigues me. and i figured this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to drum with a member of my favorite band. all of a sudden, i heard the RENT song in my head, 'forget regret or life is yours to miss'. so i talked to claudia and we decided to do it..YIKES! i'm thinking sola will say that he doesn't have room because he has more serious percussion students, but he was more than happy to squeeze a lesson in for each of us.

so i decided to do it.

the day comes and it's hot as hell in london. i'm sweating like crazy and lost looking for the studio thinking 'oh great, i'm going to smell like sweat when i get there.' after help from some lovely people, i found it. i walked in and sola had his back to me just drumming away on his own. i didn't want to interrupt, so i just stood behind him and waited until he broke his vibe. and then i said hello and he greeted me like an old friend 'oh deesha', and gave me a big hug (this wasn't our first meeting). awww...but that sentimental moment lasted for like 2 - 3 minutes.

it was time to work.

he started with simple exercises (palm - tip) and basic education surrounding the congas, etc. he explained the origin of them and we started to do an exercise which is the foundation of playing. 1-2-1-2-1-2...over andover again with both hands. i was embarrased, i sucked really, but i think he could sense i was trying and he kept saying 'it's okay, let's do it again'. i was all good up until the very end of the exercise when we did these things called 'triplets'. i kind of lost it there.

then we did some rhythm type exercises and he would play them with me and i'd be fine and then he'd stop and i got lost, but i found my way.

up until this point it was just he and i and then my dear friend david came in..oh great - another person to be embarrased in front of! but david didn't laugh at me. just took pictures. i still say he should have gotten on the drums! claudia and her sister came in a bit later in time for her lesson, but i wasn't embarrased really, and i knew that her turn was next. i just stayed focused!

the hour went so, so fast - really. and it was hot as hell in there. sola told me to watch my form in the mirror and i could see my sweat. ick! at least he knew i was working hard. he would break into these percussion numbers defining the difference between African, Carribbean, Latin and European style of drumming. i could actually hear the difference. amazing...

we didn't talk about jamiroquai at all besides him recounting how he warms up on tour. i wasn't there for that. this was my time to be a student of sola's, and as a student you sit, learn, shut up and observe...all with a smile of course! we laughed a lot and he is a funny man underneath it all, who just likes sharing his gift and making those on the other end feel good about it. he spoke of the great percussionists that he looks up to - again, presenting himself as humane and not better than anyone else.

i couldn't thank him enough for taking the time to spend with me. it was this man who i had watched drum for years and years, but it wasn't like that really - i'm a huge fan, but i know when to be humble and when to go crazy. he was just sola to me. the talented and blessed sola.

by the time my hour was up, i was ready to be done. my arm was red and my hand! it was claudia's turn and she did lovely, she really did!

since returning home, i've done the exercises on the counter..just incase sola calls me up on stage to take his place (he joked about that) during a gig. i have to be ready! i honestly don't know what he thought of me drumming. i don't think i'd want to know! i honestly think he was a bit easier on claudia and i than he would be someone who does this for a living or has percussion as a passion.

it was wonderful and invigorating...an experience i will remember as long as my mind and spirit will allow me to. there was nothing else i had to concentrate on but finding that beat. this was my stillness in time. 'right on' sola...

today is the first day of summer...the solstice i think it what it is called.

i'm currently listening to the new york jamiroquai 2005 gig. good times, good times.

anyway, i'm feeling a bit ehhh at the moment. at work - it's quiet, everyone is at a conference that i didn't have to go to! but thinking about independence and people and getting back what you put in to either a situation or a person. not expecting anything back, but respect, but when you don't get that respect...ahhhh, you get pissed off. and no, i'm not talking about love relationships. they are so unimportant in the game of life. actually overrated to me. the relationship you have with yourself is far more important.

but i remembered why it is that i don't really ask anyone for anything at anytime unless i really, really need it. because it's easier to just do things myself. really it is. and i learn. i am very blessed that i know how to survive on my own - you know. i don't need to ask anyone for anything really and that feels good, really good. it's a blessing and a curse i suppose. i actually have some type of sympathy for those that depend on others financially, emotionally or whatever. well, the financial part is tricky - if you need help, you need help and that's okay. i'm speaking of depending on someone to buy you things and keep food in your mouth. not speaking of married couples and such, but more of people who are just lazy. well, the emotional part is hard to escape, but i beat into the girls (students) heads that they need to take back the power of having someone else direct their emotions. or stop the power from being overturned. as i type this 'so good to be real' by jamiroquai is on my radio. they should have made this a whole song.

this is way to deep for a freakin blog!! hahahaha...here's something to lighten the mood - i put garbage down the garbage disposal forgetting that it's not working..ewwwww!!!! i had to dig it all out with a spoon. so not sexy!

okay, next post will be about drumming with sola, i have to get back to the lovely department of finance and accounting!

peggy just brought me up a big bag with a big D on it. it's cloth..i love it. gift from her and her daughter. it's very cute...see, sometimes i love this job.

so much to say, so little time

...there are all these words inside of me itching to get out about my trip. i am going to use one of the phrases i hate: i just don't have time! i feel like i need to properly sit down and type it all out and i haven't had a few minutes to do so.

matter of fact, i have to run now..finishing up a CD review that is overdue. have to send pitches to my editor, which i have to be super nice to right now because i just found out the brand new heavies are coming down the street from me in about 2.5 weeks...so if i am in good graces with music editor, i will perhaps get to interview them. fingers crossed.

so yes..i have to run and i must be at work early tomorrow.

it's all good. these are all reminders that i am still alive and blessed..it's - all - good.

this will be brief, but my landlord came in yesterday with the painter to my old place and they were talking about painting the walls. i was confused because i'm moving this week afte he told me he was demo'ing this place. and i was crushed..i love my apartment.

well, i said 'well, why would you paint the walls if you are knocking it all down?' do you know what this MF said to me? 'oh i decided not to do that. just paint walls and replace appliances and re-rent it at a little higher rent. WHAT?

so basically i could have stayed here. moved for a month while he did that and then moved back and the price of rent is still going to be cheaper than where i'm moving. he's lucky that i didn't punch him dead in the face...

i can't wait to buy my house next year!

anyway, that was a brief interruption in the blog...more on my european trip this week...

that would be referring to the world cup....craziness those brits over there about the games. it was great to be a part of the british 'football' experience.

my place doesn't smell like rotten indian food (i forgot to dispose of some in the fridge before i left...oops)!

...i just arrived back in philadelphia. its 1030 pm
my landlord has been in here getting the place ready for demolition, which means dirt is everywhere, but he made sure to not touch my stuff...

but guess what? by "accident" he turned off the hot water.
ha! you know...i don't really give a shit right now, because i'm so damn tired and he is going to fix it tomorrow. it's all good, he's a good 'lad'. and you know how i feel...there are people who live daily without cold or hot water, so i am blessed and will shut up. he also said i might not be able to move into the new place until next week....cool, i need more time anyway :)
and i had to practically cuss some man out at mcd's tonight...welcome home to me.

as i looked at the philly skyline, i felt good to be home, but know that this won't be my home for much longer....more later.

i am exhausted, and there is so much to detail about the days in europe.

so much. full of love and laughter and friendship and discovery....

the drumming with sola was amazing...i won't cheat the experience by trying to talk about it when i am so tired, so for now, i will say goodnight and get some rest.

mayo, mullets & crisps

oh my gosh - it's friday already. my time is going here so fast, i hate that. well...people here love mayonnaise. i don't know what it is. when i go to eat somewhere (jan just mentioned it..SEE!) there is always, always, mayonaise. i don't understand. i couldn't find tarter sauce somewhere, but there is loads of mayonnaise and this other stuff that i don't even know..it's like orange and in a tube, but not ketchup. then there's mint sauce for lamb....WHAT? funny.

and now mullets...i don't get it either. i'm not a fashionista, but who told people to start wearing mullets again? WHO? i want to find them and harm whoever that person is. so many boys and a few girlies have mullets. it's funny. if i went to work like that, beavis and butthead would never stop laughing at me. they would behind my back, but not to my face. but yes...this whole mullet thing has got to die NOW!

toledo's arrived yesterday. it was great to see them in LONDON. sofia was so excited to be here, but not more than claud. i love that family and i got to meet her sister from DR!

today we drum with sola. my nerves, my nerves :)

and i found out my friend paul is in the hospital. so, instead of hanging out, i will go visit him in a hospital here. at least it isn't major, but still enough that he is in the hospital. something about kidney stones. i was really looking forward to see him.

last night was hilarious. slapstick silly. i sat up with jan and stephan..and we laughed until about 3 or so in the morning and get this - stephan cooked us dinner. men in kitchens - yummy!! but it was a german dish. don't know what it was called, but it was delicious. we are still laughing this morning...i couldn't find the bathroom, my wig wouldn't come off (it's really my hair) and no one ever brought me 'crisps'...DAMN THEM! but it's good to just be silly. it was great seeing them.

well, i must shower and then head back to the city to drum...

today i ventured off the beaten path. wanted to see victoria park and also visit some of the young mothers in south london. what gems they are. they told me that the sexual education in schools is lacking here also. so, it's not only america it seems. i also want to visit an AIDS center that i was told about. on the way there in a few.

i could have stayed in all the tourist spots, but what is the fun and culture in that? exactly none! erica and i sat and drank and ate last night. she gave me her employee card, so i got to go on the london eye for free and will visit her at the wax museum later. ooh, what time is it?

anyway, this trip is fantastic. claudia and her family will be here tomorrow morning! i will go to manchester to see sam and buddha and then off to paris and then back to london.

i love to travel.

i called my boss though yesterday to make sure that afternoon meeting he had went okay. not that i think he can't function without me, but i worry all the time. this trip is teaching me not to.

and i've been not spending money...hell yeah!! except these damn internet cafes! actually, they are very cheap.

okay, so i've gotten all the 'main' tourist stuff done. and i actually managed to find some dope britich graffiti - these kids have got a sick hand. alright, back in the sun....

i am currently at an internet cafe outside of buckingham palace.
so yes, i am in london. this city is beautiful.
the flag is waving, which means the queen is home!!!
i am thinking of my work though and hoping my boss makes it through this thing he has this afternoon. i do miss them, but not enough to want to go back.

this morning i got a toothache OUCH!
my hotel is very nice.
i almost got hit by a car a few times....damn them driving on the OTHER side of the road. i just follow the crowd.

never wear flip flops to walk around. my feet are the color of the flip flops. hahaha.
i am having a great time. it is very clean here and the men are fun to look at. they all look like they are trying to be america's next top model. perfectly spiked hair and the fashion to go with it.
the people here have been sweet. except one guy who told me to go the wrong way to buckingham palace!
i've been on the double decker bus and the tube.
met up with my friend stephan to have a pint and now off to see erica!

and there has been no rain! how exciting.
anyway, i walked through hyde park today playing jamiroquai on my ipod. can i be any more cheesy, and i thought of the stories z told me about living here.
oh that z...creeping into my brain! ugh.

anyway, i must run. i am having such a GOOD time and it feels good not to have any responsibility. not even to another person. they say you should vacation alone once in your lfie - i so, so, so agree....feels so good...

i love it. i've written in this thing a lot the past 24 hours. i have no friends that will listen to my gibberish, i suppose..kidding - but now i remember why i deleted the last one after only 2 weeks!!!

let me tell you how much i hate british money right about now.
i give the lady money, she gives me back half in pounds. what?
damn, currency differences!

i am very excited. dad will be here in the morning to take me to the train. i'll head to new york with erin (thank you dear) and then head to JFK in the morning.

i'm tired thinking about it.

and i took out a pair of pants and sneakers from the luggage thinking it will make it lighter..bwhahahahaha...what planet was i on thinking that?

i have to say thank you to my lovely bosses HG and JB who got me the luggage (and mom), and yes i see you watching holls....thank you by the way for what you did on friday - i'll see if i can get an autograph taylor hicks tshirt in my travels - TAKIN' IT TO THE STREETS (bend over, wind up arms)!!!!!

anyway, i have high hopes for this trip. when i came back from mexico city, everything was altered including my soul. to be picked up and placed in an environment you have never been..it's like SURVIVOR, but with food, shelter, and lack of a million dollars, or as in british pounds - 500,000.ugh! but i can't wait. i'm getting ancy and as i look at this mess in my place (old place to be soon), i think how stressful moving will be.
but i can't concentrate on that. i have a continent to invade!

i love hip-hop..the culture.
i haven't been faithful to it the last year.
straying off heavily into the brit-soul scene.
but the culture i still love.
the bboys/bgirls, graffiti writers, mc's and turntable god and goddesses. these 4 things raised me up.

this year i'm missing (i'm in europe) the premier annual event that is held down the street from me every year. it's a worldwide affair that celebrates hip-hop. a weekend of really diggin' into the culture and exposing it for what it is....a beautiful art, not a media cash cow. it's a family affair - lots of kids, and adults with spirits like kids...

alrighty...i had a blog and then i deleted it and now i'm back.
this is strictly for the purpose of tracking my trip to europe.
i leave in about 48 hours. my nerves are shot.
i'm afraid i'm going to run out of money.
afraid that a french person will yell at me.
afraid that i will have to confront something i am trying to leave behind.
something, someone...WHATEVER!

it's a vacation, who needs all these deep feelings and thoughts and emotions?

not me. i paid for this trip damn it, and nothing is ruining this.
